In this absurdist afro-futurist contemporary Nollywood film, two West-African women grapple with the harrowing shadows of their colonial past as a mystical pink ancestral spirit guide shadows their every step, offering both guidance and torment.
MAGENTA: A Tale of Two Worlds delves into cultural identity, resilience, and the quest for freedom from historical shadows. In a homogenized Western world, post-colonial subjects grapple with remnants of traditional spirituality. MAGENTA conducts a genuine exploration of the modern by-products of colonialism on West African female mental health and spirituality. It prompts reflection on the potential mental and spiritual effects of cultural disorientation resulting from colonization, considering its impact on our present-day mental, physical, and spiritual development. MAGENTA stands as an essential exploration of these intricate intersections, shedding light on the nuanced aftermath of colonial legacies.
Diasporic Femme worked with the filmmaker Angel Oduko to curate the New York City premiere of the film. We created the event strategy, and hosted the event, including a panel.
